On highly automated home appliance manufacturing lines, outdoor air conditioner unit assembly serves as a critical process. Project Challenges

The original compressor loading process on the production line suffered from three core operational pain points:

Complex Positioning Conditions Compressors feature dark, highly reflective surface finishes. Traditional 2D vision and manual positioning methods struggle to deliver stable, accurate detection of workpiece incoming poses.

Stringent Cycle Time Constraints The line operates at a tight cycle time of 9 seconds per unit. Even minor processing delays can cause line bottlenecks, requiring the vision system to complete full detection and robotic guidance within ultra-fast time windows.

Limited Production Flexibility The line handles a wide range of compressor models with diverse dimensions and contours, demanding robust adaptive capabilities from the vision system to support mixed-model production.

Solution

To resolve the aforementioned operational challenges, the production line is equipped with a fixedly installed 3D laser galvanometer camera. With an overhead installation layout, the system provides comprehensive field perception and accurate positional guidance to support reliable robotic assembly in complex on-site conditions.

The system operates through four streamlined procedures:

Vision Positioning The 3D camera is mounted overhead of the two assembly stations. Once the roller conveyor delivers the compressor pallet to the designated position, the device rapidly scans the workpiece and outputs high-precision 3D point cloud data for subsequent positional calculation.

Intelligent Analysis Built-in proprietary algorithms process and optimize the collected point cloud data. The system effectively suppresses detection interference caused by dark-toned and reflective workpiece surfaces, and precisely solves the 3D coordinates and rotation angles of each compressor.

Robotic Picking The validated positional data is synchronously transmitted to the robot. The robot performs accurate picking operations based on real-time vision feedback and transports the workpiece to the assembly station.

Precision Assembly The robot precisely aligns and mounts the compressor onto the pre-fixed chassis bolt positions, completing the automated compressor assembly process with high accuracy.

Balanced Ultra-wide FOV and High Precision Within a working distance ranging from 1.2 m to 3.0 m, the camera supports an ultra-wide field of view while maintaining a steady positioning accuracy of ±1.2 mm. This well-balanced performance fully satisfies multi-target positioning requirements for large-size workpieces.

Optimized High-Speed Cycle Performance The entire workflow, from image acquisition to coordinate data calculation and output, is completed within seconds. It enables the production line to sustain a stable cycle time of 9 seconds or less, matching high-volume manufacturing demands.

High Operational Stability at 99.9% Uptime Featuring excellent environmental adaptability, the system resists interference from fluctuating workshop lighting, dark workpiece surfaces and reflective features of compressors. It maintains 99.9% operational stability, supporting uninterrupted and consistent mass production.

This project fully verifies the technical maturity of 3D vision for high-speed, high-precision industrial deployment.
