A leading superhard material manufacturer has achieved full-process automation for high-frequency flange loading and unloading operations by deploying innovative 3D vision products and solutions from Transfer Technology. The production line completes the full loading and unloading cycle of a single flange within 45 seconds, delivering 1.8 times efficiency improvement with zero manual intervention throughout the process.
Project Background
Flanges are core connecting components widely used for piping, pumps, valves and other mechanical equipment. Their mainstream manufacturing processes include casting, forging, cutting and rolling, all of which involve extensive repeated loading and unloading procedures.
Traditional manual loading and unloading not only drives up labor and production costs but also creates fundamental efficiency bottlenecks. Meanwhile, diverse on-site workpieces and high-precision assembly requirements further increase the operational difficulty of manual workflows, making conventional manual operation increasingly unsuitable for high-volume production demands.
To solve these pain points, the customer partnered with Transfer Technology to implement an intelligent automation solution. The 3D vision system achieves high-precision recognition and positioning of densely stacked, highly reflective flanges, and guides robotic arms to complete automatic picking, feeding and palletizing, realizing comprehensive intelligent upgrading of metal processing production lines.
△ Highly reflective and tightly stacked flange workpieces
The on-site production line involves two specifications of flanges with a single workpiece weight of 4 kg. The complex working conditions bring multiple technical challenges:
- Workpieces feature high surface reflectivity and tight stacking with inconspicuous surface features, placing high demands on vision recognition accuracy;
- The maximum stack dimension reaches 800mm×800mm×600mm, and the workstation is close to windows, resulting in complex and variable ambient light interference;
- Continuous capacity growth requires ultra-stable vision cycle time to match high-speed production rhythms.
Transfer Technology Solution
After in-depth on-site investigation and technical verification, Transfer Technology collaborated with system integrators to launch a customized solution integrating laser 3D camera, self-developed vision software, industrial robot and special gripper, targeting high-reflection interference and complex stacking scenarios.

Overall Workflow
1.The stacked flanges are transported to the camera’s field of view. The laser 3D camera captures high-quality point cloud data with complete structural details of the workpieces.
2.The vision software analyzes point cloud data to accurately identify the precise pose of each flange, and intelligently calculates the optimal picking position and robot motion path to ensure safe and efficient grasping.
3.After receiving the picking permission signal from the central control system, the robotic arm executes automated operations following the planned path, completing automatic material picking, replacement and palletizing via the dedicated gripper.
Project Highlights
01 Powerful Algorithm Adaptability for High-Reflection Workpieces
Recognition of highly reflective metal workpieces has long been a key technical challenge for 3D vision applications, as surface overexposure, data distortion and missing micro features can easily cause recognition failures. Equipped with multi-dimensional optimized algorithms, the system effectively suppresses ambient light interference and reflection noise, achieving stable and accurate recognition of high-reflection flanges.
02 Excellent Compatibility for Multi-Specification Production
The 3D vision system boasts strong scenario compatibility and flexible scalability. It stably adapts to the two mainstream flange specifications on the customer’s line. New product models can be quickly imported and deployed through model iteration, supporting flexible and diversified production.
03 Labor Replacement & 1.8x Production Efficiency Upgrade
The automated 3D vision robotic picking system completely replaces manual loading and unloading. It eliminates repetitive manual work, cuts labor costs significantly, and boosts overall production line efficiency by 1.8 times with stable and continuous operation.
04 Intelligent Obstacle Avoidance for Stable & Safe Production
Embedded intelligent trajectory planning and dynamic obstacle avoidance algorithms enable the robot to independently avoid on-site obstacles in complex working environments. This optimizes motion efficiency, reduces operational failure rates and equipment maintenance costs, and ensures long-term stable and safe production line operation.
As a leading supplier of 3D industrial cameras and 3D vision robot guidance systems, Transfer Technology’s products have been widely applied in automated picking scenarios for various high-reflection workpieces, including brake discs, compressors, aluminum bars, aluminum ingots and bolts. The solutions are highly recognized by well-known enterprises in automotive parts, metal machining, new energy and home appliance industries.
