Case Study | Chemical Bag Depalletizing: 3D Vision Enables Precise Unmanned Operation for Flexible Bags

In chemical production, depalletizing and feeding of bagged raw materials constitute a vital segment of the logistics chain. When dealing with flexible bags prone to deformation and irregular stacking, traditional manual depalletizing suffers from low efficiency and brings occupational health hazards including dust exposure and heavy load handling. Conventional vision systems frequently fail to tackle positioning difficulties triggered by surface wrinkles and offset placement of flexible bags, which becomes a major obstacle to production line intelligent upgrading.

To address this typical application scenario, Transfer Technology has deployed an automatic depalletizing solution for a chemical customer powered by the Epic Eye Log L industrial camera dedicated to depalletizing. Delivering consistent accuracy and stable cycle time, the system realizes fully unmanned depalletizing of flexible bags.

Project Conditions

The project is deployed at the raw material depalletizing & feeding station of a chemical manufacturer. The workpieces are bagged chemical raw materials. Standard pallet dimensions measure 1300 mm × 1100 mm, with a maximum stacking height of 10 layers. The system adopts an eye-in-hand configuration: the 3D industrial camera is mounted on the robot end-effector and moves synchronously with the manipulator to execute layer-by-layer recognition, positioning and gripping guidance for flexible bags.

Subjected to stacking pressure and transportation, on-site flexible bags commonly develop wrinkles and deformation. Furthermore, the imaging distance keeps changing as the stack height reduces during depalletizing, placing stringent demands on the vision system’s feature recognition capacity, operational stability and reliability.

Core Solution

The solution integrates Transfer Technology’s Epic Eye Log L depalletizing-dedicated 3D camera, in-house developed 3D vision algorithms and a high-precision hand-eye calibration system. As the robot moves, the system completes layer-by-layer identification, pose calculation and gripping guidance for bagged materials. Compatible with existing robot stations, it requires minimal production line modification and supports flexible deployment.

Large Field-of-View Imaging Adapted to On-site Layout

Targeting stacks up to 10 layers high, the eye-in-hand mounted camera travels together with the robot. Once one layer is fully depalletized, the camera automatically shifts above the next layer for scanning. It can fully cover the entire area of a standard pallet and maintain stable imaging even when the pallet is slightly misplaced.

High-speed Imaging & Calculation to Guarantee Cycle Time

The solution optimizes both image acquisition and algorithm processing to boost efficiency. A single 3D scan takes merely 1.7 seconds to capture complete point cloud data for an entire layer of bags. The vision algorithm is specially optimized for wrinkles and deformation of chemical flexible bags, outputting steady coordinate data to the robot.

High-precision Positioning for Reliable Flexible Bag Handling

Precision serves as the core metric for flexible bag depalletizing. Multiple rounds of on-site repetitive testing verify that the system achieves ±3 mm positioning accuracy and ±3 mm gripping accuracy. Even amid bag wrinkles and material deformation, the system can accurately locate valid gripping zones and resist interference from irregular surface features.

On-site Value

After deployment, the system successfully replaces manual depalletizing stations, lowering physical workload and occupational health risks for frontline staff. Supported by consistent precision, it prevents material falling and placement deviations caused by manual operation, improving overall production line stability.

This 3D vision depalletizing solution boasts strong versatility for the chemical sector. It accommodates various specifications of bagged raw materials and works with mainstream robot brands. The solution can be rapidly replicated across raw material warehousing, production feeding and other processes, offering a cost-effective path for intelligent upgrading of chemical production lines.
