In automotive component manufacturing, radiator loading and unloading has long relied on manual operation, suffering from low efficiency and poor accuracy. Leveraging its self-developed Epic Eye Laser L V2S 3D industrial camera, Transfer Technology has successfully deployed a dual-station intelligent loading and unloading system, enabling precise automated operation with vision-to-grasp capability.
Project Background
This application focuses on the depalletizing of automotive radiators. Radiators of various specifications are stacked on pallets with no partition boards between layers. The on-site solution requires the vision system to accurately identify radiator poses and guide robots to pick workpieces and place them on the conveyor line.
Main challenges include: Large workpiece differences: Multiple radiator models feature diverse overall dimensions, requiring rapid adaptive recognition. Dense stacking: The absence of partition boards increases the difficulty of edge detection. Environmental interference: Variable lighting on site, potential reflections and shadows.
Solution
The project adopts a dual-station layout: one Epic Eye Laser L V2S 3D camera is mounted on a mobile module and can cover two pallet positions sequentially. Upon receiving PLC commands, the camera quickly captures point clouds, identifies the position and orientation of radiators, and transmits gripping point data to the robot control system to realize fully automatic depalletizing.
Workflow
Operators deliver full radiator pallets within the camera’s field of view. The mobile module moves the camera above the pallet position; the PLC transmits the current radiator model and triggers 3D scanning. The camera identifies workpiece poses and sends coordinate data to the robot system via PLC. The robot picks the radiator and places it onto the conveyor line. The process repeats until the pallet position is empty, after which the camera switches to the other pallet position.
Technical Highlights
The implementation of this 3D vision depalletizing solution not only addresses core pain points of traditional depalletizing, but also delivers tangible operational value and helps them achieve high-quality development.
Extreme Precision and Stability
The Epic Eye Laser L V2S 3D camera delivers a positioning accuracy of ±0.5 mm. Equipped with a blue laser light source, it effectively suppresses ambient light interference and captures high-quality point clouds even under strong lighting or surface reflection conditions.
Ultra-High Recognition Rate & Efficient Cycle Time
It maintains a recognition rate of ≥99.9% to ensure long-term stable operation. The full process cycle is steadily controlled within 6 seconds, adapting to high-speed automated production lines.
Open Design & Easy Integration
The camera communicates with the PLC via TCP/IP socket and is compatible with mainstream robot brands. The system supports rapid switching between multiple product specifications and quick on-site integration of new workpieces, delivering strong flexible production capabilities.
Transfer Technology’s 3D industrial cameras, featuring high precision, industrial-grade stability and easy integration, serve as a reliable core solution for intelligent automotive parts manufacturing. Moving forward, we will keep iterating our 3D vision technology to help more enterprises complete efficient, dependable intelligent loading and unloading transformations.
